Speed & Agility Training: The Basics
Practice description (Sprinting skill is a learned activity):
This is the perfect training for kids new to track or those who want to learn the fundamentals of Sprinting. The practices will focus on Form Work, Block Technique (spikes only), plus the phases of sprinting. These practices are also good for multi-sport athletes who need Linear/Lateral/Angular Speed and proper running mechanics for their sport.
Off season training:
Off season training should start two-three weeks after your last Track Meet or Event!!!
After your break (2-3 weeks); this training will help you recover physically and psychologically from your last season (transitional phase) it will also help prevent “Nervous eating”/weight gaining and lost of strength. This training phase will be used to address the physical and neurological imbalances that are inherently developed when competing in competitive sports i.e. one side stronger than the other. The off season training program: is your transition and recovery period or “Active Recovery” phase. It’s about recovery, regeneration, maintaining fitness levels and cross-training that will allow you to maintain at least a 50-75% fitness level. In addition; off season training will help prevent “Detraining”: (doing nothing) and is better than starting from scratch your next sports season. This is less stressful on the body and will help prevent injuries and help you develop a broader base/foundation for your next sports season. The practices will also focus on nutritional values and strength/conditioning exercises with a medicine ball.
Coach Dixon will head the practices which will include but not limited to:
- Proper Sprinting form (for all sports)
- The fundamentals of sprinting; building the Five Bio Motor Skills:
- Speed: Acceleration/drive phase, Absolute Speed/Maximum velocity, Start drills, Phases of Sprinting
- Strength/Power: Core building, Strength endurance, Plyometrics (medicine-ball)
- Mobility: Dynamic warm-ups, Flexibility drills, Cool down drills
- Coordination: Block starts, Sequence of movements/Technical Execution, Balancing exercises, Agility drills
- Endurance:
- Sprinters: Speed endurance, Strength endurance (energy system training-anaerobic)
- Mid Distance and Distance: Tempo runs (energy system training-aerobic)
- Central Nervous System (CNS) drills
- Reaction to First Step drills
- Visualization and Imagery Drills
- Acceleration drills
- Dynamic warm-up drills
- Cool down drills
- Block work/Start drills
- Speed drills/Speed-Agility Training/Plyometrics/ Core Work/ Strength Conditioning
- Strength Training (varies with age)
- Phase Distribution (when to shift gears)
- And much more.
